About Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve

Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve is located in the mountainous northeastern region of Limpopo Province, South Africa, bordering the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Spanning approximately 6,227 hectares, it comprises rugged terrain dominated by steep kloofs, river valleys, indigenous forests, and open grasslands. The reserve is characterized by cooler montane climate zones, diverse plant communities including Afro-montane forest and grassveld, and several cascading waterfalls such as the renowned Bridal Veil Falls. Ecologically, Lekgalameetse is home to a variety of wildlife including nyala, kudu, bushbuck, and a rich birdlife with species like the crowned eagle and Knysna lourie. Established in 1985, the reserve serves as a protected area aimed at conserving the local flora and fauna and maintaining the ecological integrity of the region. Visitors are drawn to its numerous hiking trails that navigate through forested paths and provide panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The reserve also offers opportunities for trout fishing in its streams and photographic opportunities at scenic lookout points. Its relative remoteness compared to other nearby parks makes Lekgalameetse an appealing destination for those seeking solitude and pristine natural conditions. The reserve supports sustainable tourism with a modest number of accommodations including tented camps and picnic areas. Lekgalameetse's connection to local Venda communities adds cultural significance, with the name meaning “place of water” in the Northern Sotho language, referring to its many springs and waterways.
